While searching a bone-littered clearing, Maia and crew are attacked by a Fear Liath, a monstrous beast that seems unstoppable. Maia's bodyguard-the kishion-leaps into battle, risking his life to save her. But Maia has more to worry about than just the Fear Liath. As the fight ensues, the soldiers accompanying Maia grow suspicious and fearful of her magical abilities, branding her an abomination worthy of death.
