From the beginning of the Pacific campaign the Marines recognised the importance of using tanks to assist in assault landings by suppressing enemy machine-gun nests. For the early battles it was the M3 or M3A1 Stuart which bore the brunt of this fighting, making use of its multiple machine-guns and 37mm main gun firing canister shot to break up Japanese counter-attacks.
